Police in Gauteng have dismissed as fake news a voicenote of children being shot in Soweto.

In a statement, Gauteng police said: “The police in Gauteng have noted with concern the voicenotes that are circulating on social media about school children being shot in Orlando East, Soweto.”

“Police dismiss these voicenotes as fake news and as an attempt to scare the community, children in particular.”

The statement added that the District Commissioner of the police in West Rand, Major General Fred Kekana, and the Station Commander of Orlando Police Station, Brigadier Nonhlanhla Kubheka had met with the principal of the school mentioned in the voice notes where they were assured that all the learners were safe and no such incident had happened at the school.

“However, there is a cash-in-transit robbery that took place about 800 meters away from the school on Tuesday, 19 July 2022.”

Police called on members of the public to refrain from recirculating these voicenotes as they cause unnecessary panic in the community, especially the parents and learners”.
