How Marianne Thamm and Daily Maverick got it so badly wrong about the PA and Zondo

By: Kenny Kunene*

Marianne Thamm is either a very bad journalist or she relishes any chance to take a shot at the Patriotic Alliance (PA). Either way, she is clearly a very stupid human being.

She must have been overjoyed to read on page 282 of Volume 5, Part 1 of the Zondo commission’s final report that the PA was being mentioned. She then rushed into writing an article to say the following:

Operation Mayibuye — catch-all shotgun mission

Operation Mayibuye was initiated by Dlomo and approved by the then SSA director-general Sonto Kudjoe in 2015, the same year most of the other Central Directorate for Security Operations (CDSO) projects were approved. It was given a budget of R54 million between 1 April 2016 and 31 March 2017.

Mayibuye was “a collective name for several projects” and was established to provide counterintelligence support “to step up state authority and organs of governance”.

It was also aimed at countering “hostile behaviour or radical interests aimed at undermining the rule of law and governance in general”.

Projects that fell under the Mayibuye umbrella were operations Commitment, Justice/Simunye, Lock, Sesikhona, Safe Return, and Platinum.

Operation Sesikhona was aimed at “neutralising protests” of a group of homeless activists in Cape Town.

Activities included “destabilisation of the Democratic Alliance to garner support for the ANC in the Northern and Eastern Cape and the formation of the Patriotic Alliance to gain support “in coloured communities”.

The problem with what she wrote is that when you compare it to what actually appears in the Zondo report, she gets it totally wrong.

The report goes on to point out that none of the claims of the unnamed agents that were interviewed about these allegations could be confirmed in any way.

A simple use of two brain cells would have made it easy for Marianne Thamm to realise that the Patriotic Alliance could not possibly have been formed as part of Operation Sesikhona, since the PA was formed in 2013 and contested the 2014 elections.

Operation Mayibuye, according to the Zondo report, was only started in January 2015. The commission was told that Operation Sesikhona was supposedly part of Mayibuye.

So how, therefore, could the PA have been started in 2013 by an operation that did not yet exist?

Shame on you, Marianne.

Sad that some people still feels like the country belongs to a selected few! This is a new dispensation! We are living in a time that was ordained way before time began!

Some people should really just accept the change and move along with the times.

There is alot I could say but let me bite my tongue and swiftly move along!!!!

It’s got nothing to do with the human being herself according to my understanding. It’s called hatred and anger for something that has occurred on this journey of life. Make peace Mariaan with yourself and rebuke those demons. Can’t you not see the PA is truly a all race peoples organization and have the interest of the poorest at heart. Job creation is the way to curb poverty, crime and injustice for all that belong in this beautiful country. You’ve probably seen the ocean many times before as a kid. I only got to see it in my adult years. Beurt is Beurt!, but the only difference is that you welcome to join along on the next journey. You live once. Salute! 💚💚💚💚💚#Mariaan for PA member 👊🏽💚💚💚.
