EFF spokesperson and member of parliament (MP) Sinawo Thambo has apologised to PA deputy president Kenny Kunene and removed posts published on social media platform X, which peddled lies about Kunene. In a serries of posts. Thambo falsely claimed Kunene had paid R400 000 bail for high-profile murder accused Katiso KT Molefe, implicated in the 2022 murder of Oupa John Sefoka, popularly known as DJ Somebody, among others.

Last week, lawyers for Kunene sent Thambo a five page letter over posts on X between October 8 to 10, calling on him to withdraw the posts and make a public apology. In another post, Thambo repeated the lie peddled by national police commissioner Fannie Masemola who claimed before Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee that police twice found Kunene at Molefe’s Sandton house, a claim that has since been proven as false by PA MP Ashley Sauls who grilled Masemola on his false claims.

“The statements in question collectively create a false and damaging inference that our client is a corrupt individual engaged in criminal conduct. The defamatory allegations are calculated to defame and portray our client as being involved in unlawful activities and associated with alleged controversial or suspected criminals.

“These allegations are entirely unfounded and misleading. The dissemination of such content is not only defamatory but also intended to unjustly harm our client’s reputation and public standing,” the letter by Kunene’s lawyers read.

On Tuesday Thambo wrote back, confirming the posts had been deleted and also issued an apology on X. His post on X noted that he withdrew the posts made on October 8 and 10 about Kunene and apologised for any harm caused.

“I hereby confirm that the posts published on the 8th and 10th of October 2025 concerning Mr. Kenny Kunene (“Mr. Kunene”) have since been deleted. I further confirm that I have issued an apology to Mr. Kunene on my X profile (@Sinawo_Thambo) apologising for any harm caused therein. A copy of the apology is attached hereto marked as “A”. I undertake to refrain from making or publishing any statements or posts that may be malicious and/or defamatory towards Mr. Kunene in the future,” Thambo wrote.

The EFF spokesperson is one a few people that Kunene has taken legal action on for false and defamatory social media posts. Kunene and PA leader Gayton McKenzie have jointly dragged convicted controversial politician Mehmet Vefa Dag and alleged journalist Chanon Merricks to court for defamatory social media campaign. According to the court papers which Africa News Global has seen, the lawsuit came after Vefa Dag, president of Truth and Solidarity Movement and “journalist” Merricks launched “a deliberate and malicious defamation campaign on social media (X/Twitter) in which they accuse Mckenzie and

Kunene of serious crimes including murder, conspiracy to commit murder, corruption, assault, and tender fraud, as well as being linked to organized crime”. The matter is currently being heard in the Western Cape High Court.
