Patriotic Alliance Deputy President Kenny Kunene is set to be sworn in as a councillor on Friday in the City of Johannesburg ahead of taking up a position in the new coalition government as the member of the mayoral committee responsible for roads and transport.
Kunene was recently named as the PA’s new premier candidate for Gauteng and his deployment to the council will be to build up a record of public service ahead of next year’s provincial and national elections.
Following in the footsteps of PA president Gayton McKenzie Kunene will be donating his salary to the needy.
“This is about showing servant leadership and true commitment to a very important portfolio,” said Kunene.
“We know our roads, storm drains, bridges, and transport infrastructure in general as a city are in a state of near-permanent crisis, especially after last year’s flood damage. We have to do more than ever, with less. So I understand the scale of the challenge but I’m ready to roll up my sleeves and work.”
Kunene said he had sympathy for Joburg residents who have grown fatigued by changes in coalition governance over the years, but he had confidence that the new Government of Local Unity would be stable and hard-working. It’s easy to stand on the outside criticising. Once you actually have to face the challenges of daily governance, you realise it’s not so simple, so I think all the parties are keen to show what they’re made of and prove to voters that they’re not just about talk.
“Personally, I think they took a leaf out of the PA’s book because we’ve always maintained that we entered politics to make a real difference and you can only do that if you’re governing. The voters can only know you by the fruits of your governance labours.”
The MMC positions that are likely to be announced on Saturday at this stage look as follows:
1. Finance: Cllr. Dada Morero (ANC)
2. Group Corporate and Shared Services: Cllr. Loyiso Masuku (ANC)
3. Environment and Infrastructure Services: Cllr. Jack Sekwaila (ANC)
4. Transport: Cllr. Kenny Kunene (PA)
5. Public Safety: Cllr. Sepetlele Raseruthe (EFF)
7. Economic Development: Cllr. Nomoya Daphney Mnisi (ANC)
8. Health and Social Development: Cllr. Ennie Makhafola (EFF)
9. Human Settlements: Cllr. Anthea Natasha Leitch (PA)
10. Community Development: Still to be confirmed, but will come from a minority party
