Rain wreaks havoc in Tshwane

Heavy downpours have left parts of Tshwane flooded and with them leaving a trail of destruction.

Parts of Mamelodi and Centurion are underwater following rains that started on Friday afternoon right through the night.

Tshwane Emergency services spokesperson Charles Mabaso said there have been multiple incidents of flooding that have been reported around the Tshwane area.

“The areas most affected at the moment where our teams are on the ground conducting assessment and also having intervened since last night include large parts of Centurion around the Hennops River,” he said.

“The various low water bridges around Centurion and the Centurion Lake Hotel area are experiencing flooding at the moment.”

Mabaso added that teams were on the ground assessing the situation and assisting where necessary. The weather service said at least 10 mm of rain fell on the city in the past 24 hours with a further 60% chance of rain predicted.

Mabaso further stated that the City had activated its Disaster Management Centre at Level 3 while they are busy with mop-up operations.

“Our teams are on the ground. The Tshwane Disaster Management Centre has been activated at Level 3. Assessments are underway and a full picture of the situation will be shared once the information has been collected from all the teams on the ground,” he said.
