Another loss for SA Hip Hop

By: Lolo Mhlanga

Yet another loss has hit the SA hip hop industry following the death of Boitumelo Mooi, popularly known as Dj Dimplez.

The news of his death emerged on Sunday when Amapiano star, Lady Du, announced it on social media platforms. This took a turn as the songwriter received massive backlash for pronouncing the death before the family.

Dj Dimplez was an award-winning Dj. He had many hit songs, including the Amantombazane ( Remix) featuring the late Riky Rick, Kwesta, and more. He was a giant in the entertainment industry and the founder of Africa’s premier lifestyle event, Pop Bottles.

“It is with deep sadness that the Mooi family announces the ultimately passing of Boitumelo Athiel Mooi, popularly know as Dj Dimplez,” the Mooi family said in a statement.

“He passed away from a sudden Brain Haemorrhage. We ask for your space and respect as we process Tumi’s tragic passing. Thank you for your understanding,” the family concluded.

Dimplez’s death comes as South Africans were still mourning the death of Hip Hop and Fashion pioneer Riky Rick, legendary hip hop producer Dj Citi Lyts and Media Personality/ Journalist Kuli Roberts, to name a few.

Many supporters have been apprehensive about local celebrities dealing with depression, as Cassper Nyovest, DJ Black Coffee, and Minnie Dlamini admitted “going through a lot” in recent tweets. This has caused concern for many and sparked the discussion around mental health.

Tributes from industry friends and fans are pouring in on social media as many expressed their shock at the Djs death.

“Dj Dimples passing hits hard, still unbelievable. We are losing talented people,” @DeeMoney tweeted

@LegacyWalcott tweeted: “This feels like a nightmareโ€ฆ I canโ€™t believe it.”
