Tributes are pouring in for multi-award-winning South African musician Gloria Bosman who died on Tuesday aged 50, following a short illness.
The ANC said it was “deeply saddened by the untimely passing of renowned jazz musical maestro, Gloria Bosman”.
“Gloria Bosman, a highly decorated Soweto-born songbird was known for her ever-growing list of accolades that include two South African Music Awards.”
Gloria also shared a stage with musical legends including Hugh Masekela, Sibongile Khumalo and Sipho ‘Hotstix’ Abuse. Gloria Bosman belongs to a generation of female musical greats who refused to submit to patriarchal stereotypes in a male dominated industry. She was a fiery and militant revolutionary in the creative sector.”
The ANC said the performing arts industry and all of society “is poorer without the melodic offerings of Gloria Bosman”. “The ANC dips its revolutionary banner and extends deepest sympathies to the family, friends, colleagues and fans of Gloria Bosman. May they find solace in knowing that their loss is shared by the entire nation.”
The Soweto-born singer was known for her versatile voice and was celebrated for her ability to transcend different genres. Her first album debuted in 1999 and earned her the coveted Best Newcomer award at the South African Music Awards.
She went on to earn more than 11 nominations in her career as well as another SAMA for Best Female Composer.
