Patriotic Alliance (PA) deputy president, Kenny Kunene, has been cleared of any wrongdoing following an investigation into his alleged links to high-profile murder suspect. PA leader Gayton McKenzie announced on Facebook in his address to party members on Monday (22 September) that the investigation by top Sandton-based law firm Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr (CDH) had cleared Kunene of any wrongdoing. Kunene was suspended by the PA, and he resigned from his position as Johannesburg MMC for Transport and councillor in the City of Joburg while the investigation unfolded.

An elated McKenzie said: “To the DP, you have shown absolute leadership. When you were asked to step down from being an MMC, you asked me ‘Must I also step down as councillor’ and I said yes. You stepped down from being councillor and you never went out to go and badmouth the party. “The DP has been found that his story checks out. McKenzie said Liam Jacobs, who had replaced Kunene as councillor in the City of Joburg “will resign tonight as a councillor because he is moving straight to Cape Town. He’s going to live in Cape Town full-time because he has to travel around the country. Jacobs is the PA’s mayoral candidate in Cape town Metro. “I want to say to the DP, I am so excited. You don’t know. God is so great. I knew it. I stood with the DP, and now no one can say there is favouritism in the PA. The report is there,” said McKenzie.

Kunene was being investigated after he was found at the Sandton home of Katiso Molefe in July when Police Special Task Team descended on his home to arrest the controversial businessman. Molefe is accused of masterminding the 2022 murder of musician Oupa Sefoka, known as DJ Sumbody, and two of his bodyguards. Molefe is also accused of the murder of a Vereeniging engineer Armand Swart. At the time he was found at Molefe’s house, Kunene said he was there accompanying a young journalist from his online news website, Africa News Global.

Africa News Global has seen CDH report which found that Kunene’s version of the events that led to him being found in the premises of Molefe on 21 July 2025 was corroborated by the interviews conducted with all witnesses. Among those interviewed is trainee journalist Bianca Binase who Kunene was accompanying to Molefe’s house, PA national spokesperson and Africa News Global editor-in-chief Steve Motale and a gentleman only identified as Jabu, who facilitated Molefe’s exclusive interview with Africa News Global.

Africa News Global has seen CDH report which states: “As at the date of publishing this report we are not aware of any criminal charges or civil proceedings that have been instituted against Mr Kunene that are related directly or indirectly to his presence at the home of Mr Molefe. Accordingly, CDH has found no evidence or witness testimony that refutes the version provided by Mr Kunene for being at the home of Mr Molefe on 21 July 2025 and his version remains true on the face of it,” says CDH report.

Asked for a comment, Kunene said: “My conscience has always been clear and I’ve expected this day to come when I would be vindicated. I had nothing to hide and the lawyer’s investigation has confirmed that my version of events is true and credible.” Kunene, who was announced as the PA’s mayoral candidate in the City of Joburg last week, said he will resume his party responsibilities with immediate effect.
