Today’s weather: Unstable weather conditions across SA as severe thunderstorm warnings issued

South Africa enters Tuesday with unstable weather over the central and eastern provinces, while hot, dry conditions dominate the west. The South African Weather Service continues to warn of yellow level 2 severe thunderstorms, especially where storms may bring hail, damaging winds and heavy downpours.

Overview

Central & eastern parts: Partly cloudy with isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers, most active in the afternoon.

Northeast (Limpopo, Mpumalanga): Residual moisture supports intense, widespread storms, easing overnight.

Western regions (WC & NC): Fine, hot to very hot, especially around the west coast and interior.

Coastlines: KwaZulu-Natal and Eastern Cape coasts remain humid with light onshore winds.

City forecasts

Pretoria: Mild morning warming to 22°C; isolated thundershowers expected by late afternoon.

Johannesburg: High of 20°C with afternoon storms; cooler start at 10°C.

Cape Town: Hot at 28°C with moderate winds; mostly clear skies.

Durban: Warm and humid at 24°C; cloudy patches with a slight chance of spotty showers.

Bloemfontein: Partly cloudy and warm at 25°C; isolated thunderstorms possible.

Polokwane: Cloudy intervals with thundershowers developing; high of 22°C.

Upington: Very hot and dry at 33°C; stable conditions persist.

Gqeberha: Partly cloudy and mild with a high of 23°C.

East London: Warm at 24°C, with coastal cloud and light breezes.

Weather alerts

Yellow Level 2: Severe Thunderstorms

Affected regions: Central and eastern provinces — including Gauteng, Free State, North West, KZN inland, Mpumalanga Highveld, and Limpopo.

Risks: Strong damaging winds, hail and heavy downpours leading to localised flooding.

Advice: Seek shelter during storms, avoid low-lying roads and secure outdoor items.

Tuesday will see a sharp contrast across the country. While the west bakes under hot, dry conditions, the central and eastern regions brace for scattered thunderstorms, some of which could become severe. Temperatures remain moderate across Gauteng and the Highveld but rise sharply toward midweek.
