Police have recovered commercial explosives believed to be used in ATM and Cash-in-transit robberies in KwaZulu-Natal.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Vish Naidoo said the explosives were recovered during an Intelligence-driven operation by members of the Pietermaritzburg K9 Unit at an abandoned house in the Bruntville area in Mooi River.

“These explosives have been confirmed to be Viper booster which are generally used in mining. Although not confirmed yet, it is suspected that these explosives may have been intended for Automated Teller Machine (ATM) bombings and/or Cash-in-Transit (CIT) heists as similar explosives are known to have been used for this purpose before,” said Naidoo.

He added that these types of explosives have been recovered previously as well.

“No arrests have yet been made with regards to explosives recovered today and we are appealing to anyone who has any information to please contact the SAPS on 086 00 10111. All information will be treated with strictest confidence and callers may remain anonymous,” he said.
