The Patriotic Alliance (PA) has expressed satisfaction with the outcome of its meeting with the ANC Gauteng leadership over dispute reinstatement of its deputy president Kenny Kunene as MMC for Roads and Transport in the City of Joburg. The meeting, which took place on Wednesday, came after PA leader Gayton McKenzie gave the ANC in the City of Joburg 7-day ultimatum to reinstate Kunene, failing which the PA would pull out of all coalition governments with the ANC in all municipalities and provinces. McKenzie also threatened to resign as Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture unless Kunene was reinstated.
Kunene resigned as councillor and MMC in July after police found him at the Sandton house of high-profile murder suspect Katiso Molefe. However, Kunene was cleared of any wrongdoing following an investigation by top Sandton-based law firm Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr (CDH). The ANC delegation that met with the PA comprised members of the Gauteng Provincial Task Team (PTT) Amos Masondo, Gauteng premier Panyaza Lesufi, Hope Papo, Gauteng Human Settlements MEC Tasneem Motara and Johannesburg executive mayor Dada Morero.
The PA delegation, led by Kunene comprised party national chairperson and member of Parliament (MP) Marlon Daniels, party treasurer general (TG) Anthea Leich, party national spokesperson Steve Motale, and national executive committee (NEC) member and party’s head of marketing Bakang Lethoko. Addressing PA members on Facebook live following the meeting Kunene said the PA was happy with the outcome of the meeting. He added that the meeting not only dealt with the PA’s demand for his immediate reinstatement but also dealt with the PA’s unhappiness with how it was being treated in other municipalities in Gauteng where it is part of coalition with the ANC. He said these municipalities included City of Johannesburg, Ekurhuleni, Emfuleni and the West Rand.

“Both parties agreed that the outcome of the meeting would be made public after the PA delegation had consulted with it national executive committee (NEC) and the ANC delegation had also consulted other coalition partners. “The fact that there are consultative processes ongoing between us and the ANC effectively puts the 7-day ultimatum we had given the ANC on hold,” Kunene said. Kunene said they were hopeful that the final outcome of the meeting would be announced before the end of the week.
