The ANC in the North West is expected to hold its provincial conference only at the end May.
This comes after the party postponed the conference twice this year, to allow all branch general meetings to seat.
According to an ANC NEC member who spoke on condition of anonymity, the province has made good progress in the last few months.
“They are left with 62 branches to reach 70% threshold which they are finishing in the coming weekend,” said the NEC member.
However, former provincial chairperson Supra Mahumapelo denied that the province had reached a threshold of 70%, adding that there were many complaints levelled against some interim provincial committee (IPC) and interim regional committee (IRC) members’ conduct.
“The province is not yet at 70%. Many disputes are based on some IPC and IRC members forcing branches to nominate them failing which the branch general meeting (BGM) is disrupted. There are also allegations of rampant buying of branches and delegates,” Mahumapelo added.
He told Africa News Global that he had personally lodged a complaint with the National Executive Committee (NEC) convenor Obed Bapela.
The ANC in the North West has for a long time been characterised by divisions. The province last had the Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) in 2017 which was led by Mahumapelo before it was dissolved in 2018 and replaced by an Interim Provincial Committee (IPC).
The IPC was expected to have taken the province to the conference as early as 2020, but that was delayed by the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.
All provincial conferences are expected to seat before the national conference which is to take place in December.
The ANC NEC has failed us as members of the ANC. We are led by people whose term. of office has lo g lapsed. The same IPC members are running processes, contesting for PEC positions and also serving as Dispute committee members and everyone expects the processes to be fair.
