The City of Johannesburg Council meeting that was to take place on Tuesday has been cancelled as a result of the resignation of Thapelo Amad, as the executive mayor.
Ahmad resigned on Monday, just a day before city councillors were due to vote in a no-confidence motion against his leadership.
In a memorandum to all city councillors on Monday evening following Amad’s resignation, council Speaker Colleen Makhubele said: “Please note that the 13th Ordinary Council Meeting that was to take place on Tuesday, 25 April 2023 has been cancelled until further notice. The cancellation was necessitated by the resignation of the Executive Mayor, Councillor Thapelo Amad, as Section 60(5) of Local Government Municipal Structures Act 117 of 1998, as amended requires that: “If the executive mayor vacates office, the mayoral committee appointed by that executive mayor dissolves.”
Makhubele further informed councillors that there will be an extra-ordinary Council Meeting on Tuesday 2 May to elect the new executive mayor.
Africa News Global has reliably been informed that Kabelo Gwamanda, also from Al Jama-ah will replace Amad as mayor.
