Patriotic Alliance (PA) leader Gayton McKenzie has sarcastically welcomed Ekurhuleni executive Mayor Tania Campbell’s decision to remove from her mayoral committee two PA ouncillors.
In apparent tit-for-tat move, triggered by the PA’s support of a motion of no confidence against former City of Joburg Mayor Mpho Phalatse a few days ago, DA’s Campbell fired PA councillors, Bakang Lethoko and Dino Peterson, who were MMCs for Health and Social Development and Human Settlements respectively.
In his response McKenzie said: “The DA Mayor in Ekhuruleni just removed, as it’s her right the PA Councillors from the Mayorol Committee, we wanna thank her for the time our councillors served on her committee, and our councillors gracefully accept her decision.”
Lethoko and Peterson were equally sarcastic in their response to their sacking. They thanked Campbell for “the opportunity to serve on your Mayoral Committee”.
In a statement released by the so-called multiparty coalition technical team comprising delegates from the DA, ActionSA, IFP, ACDP and the FF PLUS, the parties said a decision had been taken to remove COPE and the PA as coalition partners in Ekurhuleni Metro.
The parties said the three MMC vacancies would be filled by the DA (Human Settlements), and ActionSA (Health and Social Development). “These developments come in the wake of ensuring that the interests of the future of the City the administration and residents are upheld. This will also ensure that the multi-party coalition government remains stable and focused in turning the City around, and arresting the decay of service delivery.”
ANC Ekurhuleni says they intend tabling a motion of no confidence in Ekurhuleni Mayor and DA member Tania Campbell.
