Patriotic Alliance (PA) President Gayton McKenzie has praised his party for its massive growth in the Western Cape.
McKenzie said the growth was demonstrated by his party’s performances in by-elections, the latest being Ward 2 Barrydale, Western Cape this week where the PA came second.
McKenzie said the PA “is massively proud about our performance in the by-election in Barrydale”. “We want to give our heartfelt thanks to the voters who did not baiza and trusted the PA with their cross yesterday. As always, the selfless hard work of all the PA volunteers who worked tirelessly to make this possible humbles us and makes us grateful to be led by true patriots at all levels of our organisation. We are doing this for our children, not for ourselves,” said McKenzie.
The ANC won the ward after receiving 910 votes (37%) while the PA received 766 votes (31.23%). The DA received 736 votes (30%), Good 31 (1.26%) and the EFF received 10 votes (0.41%).
McKenzie said the PA had hardly featured in Barrydale in the 2021 Local Government Elections. “However, after just 18 months, the PA has made significant strides. We are now the second most popular party in the ward as voters continue to show confidence in the fastest-growing party in South Africa.”
McKenzie added: “While others would be disappointed to not win the ward outright after coming so close, we see this as far more than we could ever have asked for. It is a victory for us and we will celebrate it for what is. Coming second and beating the DA in a supposed stronghold is a huge milestone for us. This ward has previously exchanged hands between the DA and the ANC, but the duopoly ended this week. It is a sign of bigger things to come.”
Added McKenzie: “Let’s not forget that in the previous elections, the PA only received nine votes in this ward. Our performance in Wednesday’s by-election means the PA has grown by more than 8,400% in this ward. This is a clear warning to the DA that its days of governing the Western Cape are numbered. Come 2024, the Western Cape will be governed by a coalition government in which the Patriotic Alliance will be a major partner.”
