Central Karoo District Executive Mayor Gayton McKenzie this Friday will celebrate his 100 days in the mayoral seat by presenting the achievements of his first three months in office.

McKenzie will present to the media several areas of growth that the municipality has undergone since he became the first citizen of the Central Karoo.

In a statement, the speaker of the Central Karoo district, Liezel Paulse said a number of investment opportunities have been developed in that area since McKenzie stepped into office. Not only did the finances of the municipality improve but the lives of the people of the Karoo had changed for the better.

Paulse said just in three months the bucket system in the area had been eradicated, public swimming pools had been repaired and pot holes had been filled.

“The mayor came into office with a bold and ambitious plan to turn around the fortunes of the district which had been plagued with joblessness, lack of service delivery and maladministration for years,” Paulse said.

McKenzie had also received opposition from political parties such as the DA for switching lights off for businesses in that area that owed the municipality hundreds of thousands of rands in unpaid rates.

Paulse said this showed the mayor’s commitment to equality and holding the wealthy accountable.

Paulse said the first 100 days of the mayor also saw land being rolled out for housing.

“There was the launch of dozens of new businesses and industries and a general return of optimism and hope. All of this has been achieved despite Beaufort West Municipality facing a severe cash flow crunch,” Paulse said.

She said most projects were being funded through donations while the municipality itself is being set back on a path to financial health and growth.

“The district is now on its way to becoming an industrialized growth center in South Africa with no unemployment.”

The mayor will deliver his report on Friday to all South Africans on with the media being granted an opportunity to ask questions.
