City of Joburg Member of the Mayoral Committee for Roads and Transport, councillor Kenny Kunene on Thursday 5 October announced the appointment of a new group of Metrobus route inspectors.
Kunene said: “These dedicated professionals, who are not new employees but rather experienced former bus operators, will play a crucial role in ensuring the safety and efficiency of our bus routes.”
Kunene added that each bus route inspector would be responsible for conducting “rigorous inspections of our bus routes, evaluating various aspects such as adherence to schedules, driver behavior and passenger safety”.
“By closely monitoring these key areas, they will play a vital role in ensuring that Metrobus continues to operate at the highest standard.”

He added: “The appointment of these former bus operators as inspectors marks an exciting development for Metrobus. Their extensive experience and in-depth knowledge of our bus routes will be invaluable in identifying areas for improvement and implementing measures to enhance overall service delivery. The main objective of these newly hired inspectors is to ensure higher levels of revenue collection and eliminate the pilferage of cash.”
“Metrobus takes great pride in investing in the professional development of its employees. The appointment of former bus operators as route inspectors is a testament to the entity’s commitment to promoting career growth within the organisation.”
Kunene said the upskilling of “these seasoned employees therefore creates an opportunity for the recruitment of young future employees” .
He said as his department celebrated October Transport Month, the planned initiatives would continue to highlight the City’s plans which are aimed towards building an effective, safe, affordable, accessible, and reliable transport system.
Kunene said he and the transport department would continue to provide residents with information to empower them about public transport and road safety through various interactive and face-to-face information sharing sessions.
