Gas explosion rocks Joburg CBD

Gas Explosion - corner of Bertha and De Korte Streets, Braamfontein, Johannesburg

By: ANG Reporter

Five people have been left injured following a fire which broke out at a building in Braamfontein between the corner of Bertha and de Korte streets on Tuesday afternoon where an Egoli Gas team was servicing a pipeline.

City of Joburg Emergency Services (EMS) responded to the reports of the fire which broke out and engulfed a building and truck.

In a statement Egoli Gas said the incident was “an isolated fire on one of our gas lines”.

“The gas pipeline was immediately isolated and the fire was contained within 15 minutes.”

Egoli Gas said it had been working closely with the Executive Team of the City of Johannesburg since the Bree Street explosion in July 2023 to make the city safe. “This involves exposing sections of pipeline and sleeving to ensure integrity of the network.”

“This process of making the city safe is being rolled out in phases; following the explosion in Bree Street in July and possible damage to the Egoli Gas infrastructure due to that incident.”

“Egoli Gas in conjunction with the Executive Team of Johannesburg will put extra measures in place going forward to ensure that an incident like this does not re-occur.”

Egoli Gas said a root cause analysis would be concluded and that a agreement had been reached with the Executive Team of Johannesburg that JMPD “and EMS will be informed of future work to assist with the management of traffic and public movement in areas where work is planned”.
