Nearly 80 people were injured on Tuesday in a collision between a Metrobus single decker and a student bus shuttle on Kingsway Road, Auckland Park, Joburg.
In a statement, City of Joburg acting member of the mayoral committee (MMC) for Roads and Transport Councillor Anthea Leitch said “as per reports received, 77 passengers were injured, 19 of which are students, and have been transported to hospitals within the vicinity for medical attention”. There were no fatalities reported.
“It is with great dismay that I express regret for this occurrence. I would like to thank the first respondents that were on the scene and attended to all the passengers, as well as the UJ operations department for their assistance and immediate response.”
Leitch said they would be working very closely with JMPD “to ascertain the cause of this accident and ensure that effective recourse is affected”.
“Our prayers are with the injured passengers. I will be engaging the Executive Mayor and MMC for Public Safety, so that we can arrange hospital visits.”
