The ANC in KwaZulu Natal has once more postponed its long awaited provincial congress which was supposed to be held next week.
The postponement does not come as a shock as the KZN leg of the provincial congresses of the ANC is expected to be highly contested.
KwaZulu Natal has had a history of being extremely influential when it comes to the national elective congress of the ANC. With the current factions in the ANC some have noted that KZN had a strong Jacob Zuma support base.
At the time of Zuma’s arrest the province was devided in terms of the broader ANC decision to support the work of the constitutional court which sent Zuma to prison. The provincial congress was expected to be held between July 15 and 17.
A spokesperson for the party in KZN, Nhlakanipho Ntombela said the conference will now be held from the 22nd to the 24th of July to give adequate time for participants to be organized.
“The move is aimed at ensuring that all Branch General Meetings (BGMs) are convened and allow the process of nomination of leadership to unfold. At this stage all the BGMs that have concluded its duties were convened successfully,” Ntombela said.
Ntombela said the PEC decided to set the cut-off date of BGMs to July 10 2022.
“Adherence to these dates will ensure that all ANC internal processes, including disputes and verification are done with diligence timeously,” Ntombela said.
He said the ANC has a responsibility to ensure that its conference is held within the ambit of its constitution and all its prescripts. “Equally, it is mandatory for the movement to advance democracy and provide a conducive platform for its members to engage each other,” Ntombela said.
Ntombela said the ANC was on the rebuilding, renewal and unity trajectory, which needs to ensure that all systems are in place ahead of the conference.
